Our story
A museum born from history itself
Museum Aceh opened in 1915 as a pavilion of ethnographic objects under the Dutch colonial administration. Over a century later it stands as the keeper of Acehnese memory — surviving conflict, occupation and the 2004 tsunami, and reopening stronger each time.
Today the museum cares for more than 2,400 artifacts and welcomes visitors from all over the world to experience the story of a people known as Serambi Mekkah — the Veranda of Mecca.

1915
The first pavilion
Opened as an ethnographic museum during the colonial era.
1948
National recognition
Became one of Indonesia's earliest provincial museums.
1980
New main building
The Rumoh Aceh-inspired main hall was inaugurated.
2004
Surviving the tsunami
Collection secured; the site became a refuge for survivors.
2007
Reborn
Renovated galleries reopened with a modernized permanent exhibition.
